What the heck is a Macro?

June 23, 2016 by BrookeWeiss

Ice Cream Macros

At this point, I am sure many of you have heard the word “macro” because it has become widely talked about recently. Well, what in the hell is a macro that the fitness industry keeps talking about. The word macro is short for macronutrients which consists of food calories from protein, fat and carbs. They are called MACROnutrients because these three nutrients (protein, fat and carbs) are what your body needs the most amounts of. Micronutrients, also known as vitamins and minerals, your body needs in a much smaller amount.

So, why are macros getting all of this attention? Well, with the correct balance and portion of each macro, it can have major effects on your body. Following a specific macro breakdown for your body type and activity level ensures that the calories you are consuming go to the right places in your body for optimal energy levels, preserve lean muscle mass, rid unwanted body fat or gain lean muscle mass. No matter your goal, there is a macro breakdown to help you achieve it.

Breakfast macros

I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet. Have you ever been out to eat, at a birthday party, going to an unexpected happy hour and feeling you can’t eat the burger and fries, piece of birthday cake or take advantage of the 1/2 off appetizer? With tracking your macro intake, it will free you from the guilt you may feel when eating that burger or birthday cake because ALL foods are made up of the three macronutrients (protein, fat and carbs). Say adios to food deprivation and say hello to food freedom.

Out to eat macros

I have just scratched the surface of macros but will be diving into it more in coming posts. You will also be seeing small changes on the blog as I am continuously evolving to be the best me, but you will just have to wait a bit longer for those!
